My love affair with the ALL Nighter Stove started well over 30 years ago when I worked for the company that produced this family of sturdy wood burning stoves in Glastonbury Ct. I delivered many of these would stoves through out eastern ct.
A few years ago I bought a used All Nighter Wood Stove. I had always wanted to put one in my workshop, but never got around to it, but just having one sitting in my basement allowed me to officially claim membership rights in the exclusive "ALL NIGHTER WOOD STOVE CLUB."
Our basement is no longer below ground, so we lose the insulation effect that most basements below ground enjoy. Our pipes started to freeze up and it felt like walking on ice when walking on the floors. Serious condensation was forming under our rugs and the wood floors in the living room started to buckle slightly.
Recommendations ranged from electric heat tape to a propane heating system for the basement space.
We decided to bring Big Moe to life.

This was not as easy as it seems. Where was I to run the stove pipe?? I always found that shiny triple walled stove pipe running up the side of a house to be a eyesore. But I did not have time to run the pipe up through the middle of the house, and through the roof. I needed this up fast. So after some careful consideration and a couple of nights of frozen pipes, I decided the pipe running up the side of the house was going to look beautiful in my eyes if it heats the basement, and in the future if I want to run it up out of sight I will.
I was very lucky to find a guy over in Manchester selling copies of the out of print owners manual. A owners manual is needed for the building permit and the stove has not been in production for many years, so I was lucky to get a copy so fast.
Willie came out and to help me run $1000 worth of pipe and hook it up. He then gave me some pointers on burning wood, but no one warned me how awful the new black stove pipe was going to smoke and smell as it seasoned. the entire house smelled extremely awful.
Now that Big Moe is installed, I am going to call on the Guru of All Nighter Stoves. I am lucky to know this ancient wood burner from Bozrah who may be one of the founding fathers of the All Nighter Wood Stove Club, He has burned a All Nighter for at least 30 years and hopefully will share some secrets of efficient burning.
In the meantime, splitting and hauling wood is cutting into my Oprah time.

Moe is beautiful!! There is a black conditioner you can run on to make look better. But if she is hot and toasty, who cares if she is looking snazzy!! I wish we could have a wood stove again, no footprint! There is nothing like the warmth extruding from one. Tank God for Willie. Godd luck! Love, Mom
ReplyDeleterub not run! oops!
ReplyDeletehello my friend: sooo happy for you and Jean, sounds like things are going well, i think of you often...may you have a Blessed Christmas and yes, think spring
ReplyDeletelove, babycakes
Great site, keep up the good work, my colleagues would love this. I read plenty of blogs every day, and for the most part the authors lack substance, but not in this case. I just wanted to make a short comment to say I’m glad I found your blog, I'm gonna bookmark the riverhomestead.blogspot.com web site. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI also just bought a refurbed Moe All nighter and am in need of the manual for the fire marshall. Could you send me a copy or direct me to where you found it
ReplyDeleteJust bought what I believe to be a Giant Moe All Nighter. Having trouble finding a label; any model marking, UL number. Wonderful looking stove - folks have had a Mid Moe for 25+ years. Looking to repaint or stove black. Sure can't find any info to speak of. Is there anything else beyond your installation manual available? So much on Fisher out there and I know the Fisher/All Nighter story, but have to love the blower and the window glass. All info would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks for your site......

ReplyDeleteI was told when I purchased a copy of the installation manual; all I needed was the UL stamp printed on the last page for the UL proof, and the installation section which shows the clearance needed.
ReplyDeleteAs for using stove black or paint, I have seen some stoves looking brand new after using stove black, but personally, I my nose can not stand the smell when you light up the stove and burn that fresh paint or stove black off.
We just moved from the little Moe to the mid Moe. We are looking for a manual if anyone has one. My husband grew up with a mid moe but we want all the tips we can get! Damn this stove is so pretty! Nothing like them out there, so blessed to have one! Please feel free to send us any suggestions or comments! patryschultz@sbcglobal.net

ReplyDeleteMy family is the original owner of a big moe and little moe. They were bought brand new around 1973ish.I recently found the rear back seam(weld) to have a slight crack and it is in need of new bricks ( big moe). I think they are not a "standard size" and I think it needs 30 plus or minus new bricks. I think from my measurements that they are 7x5x1.25 inches. Any body out there with any ideas about what to or where to get the brick? The stove has been burning in my barn for 22 years.
ReplyDeleteI also have a Big Moe All Nighter. Mine does not look like any I have seen online. It Is wide, but not as deep as the Big Moe's I have seen. It has a 8" pipe fitting coming out of the back. I LOVE this thing, and would love to find out more about It.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Jason.
unperso...I recently picked up a "Little Moe". She was on her side sittin' in the back of an old ford pickup, ready to be shipped off to the metal recycler. She was rusty as all get out and did not look like much. Well upon knocking on the door to the home where the pickup sat I come to find that "Little Moe" was heading to the dumpster...and it was just fine if I wantd to hoist 'er outta the pickup bed and take 'er. I did and she now sits in my work shop looking sweet as ever. Several hours of restoration were well worth the effort. Winters here drop to well below 20 degrees below zero(good o' wyoming). Looking forward to a toasty work shop via "Little Moe". Glad to have found this site. I did not know what a find I had made. cheers you all LB
ReplyDeleteI restored a Little Mo' that was sitting in my late father's backyard, but it's missing the two diffusers (at least I think they're diffusers) that go on the small holes on the front slope. Any ideas where I can get those anymore? I can't seem to find any resources for replacement parts.
DeleteI believe I may have 2 I can look tomorrow
DeleteWe used our Little Moe in our 1850s Victorian that had 12 foot ceilings.Kept 3 rooms 70 degrees + all winter long (the rest of the house hovered in the low 60s (energy crisis years - early 1970s). My husband got lots of good exercise/stress relief spliting wood.Moe sits on our back porch - not sure what will become of him - hoping that I can give him to someone who will be willing to haul him off and treat him well!
ReplyDeleteI heat my home with a Moe in the center of the house vented into a massonry chimney..The house is a 1650 sq. ft. colonial. The Moe keeps up into the low teens with wind, then the oil burned tas to kick in about once an hour. The entire house stays at 72-74 degrees.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I were just at the local metal recyclers trying to find a wood stove to replace our old cylynder wood stove and we stumbled accross the all nighter. It is very reasonable but we didn't know anything about this stove. Thank you for your information. We are very excited about it. We live in Wisconsin so we get our share of cold. This would certainly be more efficient than our current model. People think we are crazy for heating with wood, but we love it and we don't have to worry about keeping warm.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI've found a "chubby moe" allnighter in my mothers back yard under a tarp. Any ideas of how much this would be worth? Is anyone looking for one of these? It's rusty but looks to be in good condition. Missing glass and knobs on handles. Email Jodi pjgrant05@comcast.net

ReplyDeleteJust got an old big moe all nightwear.Does anyone know the sixe for the door gasket? Looks like maybe 3/8.
ReplyDeletePlease inform.Thanks.
I have a Big Moe and would like to find a set up for the air intake/heat exchange port on the left side of the stove. It looks like it would accept 2.5 inch tube & fan to force air through the internal tubes out to the dual heat exhaust ports on the upper front of stove.
ReplyDeleteAny one know how this is done or can build one for me? Thank you Lisa
Live in Manchester, CT would like to know who you were in touch with to get a manual. Wish someone would post the owners manual on line.....Seems to be the hardest thing to find for the Little Moe.
ReplyDeleteI just bought an all nighter, not sure if it is a big, mid or little mo but I do have a question. We finally got it installed yesterday and lit it up tonight, there is smoke coming from the vent holes??? Why is this happening?
ReplyDeleteNot sure how old my All NIGHTER stove is ... but rope around inside lip of hinge door is half gone. I need to replace. Please advise. Also, white material under string looks like ASBESTOS? Is this cement or was asbestos used for holding in the rope gasket?
ReplyDeleteI HAVE AN ALL NIGHTER LIKE THE ONE PICTURED BUT LOOKING BETTER. SOMEONE WANTS TO BUY IT. WHAT WOULD BE THE VALUE. PLEASE ADVISE FAST WANTS IT YET THIS MONTH. THANK YOU.

ReplyDeleteWould like to join "all nighter wood stove club" Oxoboxo@aol.com
ReplyDeleteHave any of you built/fabricated a baffle for the Allnighter? I'm looking to possibly install a baffle in the back of the stove near the rear flue to hopefully increase the efficiency of my stove as it blows through wood. Any thoughts?
ReplyDeletehey Jason re: last post check out hearth.com its a site search pre EPA stoves someone there did that I think there is a explanation on how to do it
ReplyDeleteMy Little Moe does not eat wood and is not a smoke dragon like some of the people say I guess maybe . It takes a while to get them dialed in it seems to perform better when temps are below freezing anything above 40 deg F I have to cut the air back becasue my house gets to warm
hope this helps hope no one minds that I mentioned the other site
I read the top update that said to look at post on 10/1/2011 for manual info, but I am not finding it. I just looked at a house for sale with a big Moe near the front door that leaded to a large porch with a cement slab floor for wood storage!
ReplyDeleteA manual would be very handy. Thank you

ReplyDeleteI just got my 2nd Glo Mo with the front glass on the door...just need to put all new gaskets on the door and window and drill out 4 10-24 screws that snapped the heads off and new bolts for the draft knobs and she will be ready. The piping configuration is in the back instead of the side like my last one I had in New England and sold and I thought that one was a 6 " exhaust but this one is 8 " or I can be having memory issues..

Just bought big moe. Replacing fire brick where some of the brick was pushed up above the others. Found piece of warped sheet metal below all the bottom bricks. Is not part or the stove steel bottom. Anyone know why the heavier piece of sheet metal would’ve been installed before the bottom brakes were put in?

ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI live in Glastonbury, CT place were All N stoves were made.
I own mid Moe, it came with the house.
I discovered a crack in the back, I'm planning to weld it.
My question- Is it steel plate or cast iron?
I think it's steel plate but I want to check first.
Thanks,
Steel box, cast iron door.
ReplyDeleteWe had the same issue with our All Nighter. We had the Crack welded, and is running great... No leakage.

ReplyDeleteI just bought a house in the Pocono PA region that has an All Nighter Big Moe. Want to sell it. It needs work. Anyone in the Tri State area interested??? (NY, PA,NJ)
ReplyDeleteI just might have bought my Moe from your Bozrah Guru back in the mid-70s. The store was Yantic Wood and Coal. Really nice young couple, but I no longer have the recall power to remember his name. I bought my Stilh chainsaw from him too. Stove is still running fine after all these years. Bearing on the squirrel-cage blower went out a few years ago, so I just put a small fan on the floor aimed directly at one of it's walls and that gives some extra heat, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat size door gasket is best for big moe?
ReplyDeleteI have for sale a big moe, in good shape, has all the parts. Is the version with the blower inlet on the side. Heated 1800 swuare feet with only it for about 12 years.
ReplyDeleteIf you're interested post here, I'll check back.
I’ve refurbished like 15 mid moes but finally got my hands on a jumbo, does any one know the correct size gasket for these, it doesn’t seem to seal tight on the hinge side and the latch side pretty much bottoms out.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for the covers for the air heat vent tubes. Big mo.
